Formed in 1967 by former Motions guitarist Robbie van Leeuwen, the Dutch quartet Shocking Blue originally had a lineup of VanLeeuwen on guitar, lead vocalist Fred DeWilde, bass player Klaasje Van der Wal, and drummer Cornelius Van der Beek, and the initial configuration of the band had a minor homeland hit with пїЅLucy Brown Is Back in TownпїЅ a year later in 1968. Things really got moving, though, when DeWilde was replaced by sultry singer Mariska Veres, whose sexy presence and solid singing brought the band a second Netherlands hit, пїЅSend Me a Postcard,пїЅ and then a huge international smash with пїЅVenusпїЅ in 1970 after the group had signed to Jerry Ross' Colossus Records imprint. Although Shocking Blue's albums (1968пїЅs Shocking Blue, 1969пїЅs At Home, 1970пїЅs ScorpioпїЅs Dance, 1971пїЅs 3rd Album, 1972пїЅs Inkpot, 1972пїЅs Attila, 1973пїЅs Dream on Dreamer, and 1974пїЅs Good Times) featured progressive rock elements and inventive arrangements thanks to VanLeeuwen's writing and production skills, the band was essentially marketed as a pop singles unit, and while they scored several subsequent hits in their homeland, none of the groupпїЅs releases approached the massive saturation success of пїЅVenus.пїЅ Veres left Shocking Blue in 1974 to pursue a solo career, and while there have been various reunions and different touring incarnations of the band over the years (including a version fronted by Veres in the '90s), its creative history ended then. VanLeeuwen later re-surfaced in the folk/jazz group Galaxy-Lin, while his most famous composition, пїЅVenus,пїЅ continued to see play on oldies stations. Veres died of cancer in 2006 at the age of 59.

In the 1970's, funk was the soundtrack to the African-American experience. From the jazz-inflected funk of Roy Ayers and Lonnie Liston Smith, to the pop of Stevie Wonder, and the abstract freakouts of Eddie Harris and the iconic cartoon funk of Parliament/Funkadelic, this was the thread that held everything together. It was the death of bebop and the seeds of disco and hip hop. It challenged rock as king of the heap, and ultimately got a nation to shake its booty.

Riding high on the phenomenal success of A Rush of Blood to the Head, Coldplay is in peak form on Coldplay Live 2003. This DVD was filmed (on Super-16mm film) and recorded in Sydney's Horden Pavilion on July 21 and 22, 2003, during an exhaustive year-long world tour, and the medium-sized arena provides a fitting stage for the London-based rock quartet, not so grand as to overwhelm the music, but large enough to indicate their large and loyal following, which includes enthusiastic fans of either gender.

The people from Stretch and Concord Records never seize to amaze me with their release from Chick Corea "Rendezvous in New York", featuring the talented Bobby McFerrin scatting his way through three tunes, one being "Blue Monk" in a classic performance.
Several highlights come to mind "Glass Enclosure/Tempus Fugit", a tribute to the Bud Powell Band. "Crystal Silence", featuring Chick along with Gary Burton as two master musicians work so well together. "Lifeline", gives us the Chick New Trio, with some bright spots to enjoy. This is one not to miss, and should be on top of the stack you play every week. The recording is crisp and clear as a bell. An intimate evening with classical crossovers into the World of Jazz by Corea !!!
