After a well-timed fist through the wall of a hotel suite andmany fevered negotiations, music supervisor Don Kirschner was out andthe band hit the studio by themselves. With the help of producer ChipDouglas, the band spent some time learning how to be a band (asdocumented on the Headquarters Sessions box set) and set about recordingwhat turned out to be a dynamic, exciting, and impressive album.Headquarters doesnt contain any of the groups biggest hits, but itdoes have some of their best songs, like Nesmiths stirring folk-rockerYou Just May Be the One, the pummeling rocker No Time, the MOR soulballad Forget That Girl, which features one of Davy Jones bestvocals, Peter Torks shining moment as a songwriter, For Petes Sake,and the thoroughly amazing (and surprisingly political) Randy ScouseGit, which showed just how truly out-there and almost avant-garde MickyDolenz could be when he tried. Even the weaker songs like thesweet-as-sugar Ill Spend My Life with You, the slightly sappy Shadesof Gray, or the stereotypically showtune-y Davy Jones vehicle I CantGet Her Off My Mind work, as they benefit from the stripped-down andinventive arrangements (which feature simple but effective keyboardsfrom Tork and rudimentary pedal steel fills from Nesmith) and passionateperformances. Headquarters doesnt show the band to be musicalgeniuses, but it did prove they were legitimate musicians with enoughbrains, heart, and soul as anyone else claiming to be a real band in1967.
