Life is fleeting as the butterfly, beautiful yet transient. As legends has it, a pair of butterfly lovers reappears once more after having gone through three lifetimes of repeated pain and tears.

Liang is highly skilled in martial arts and resides in the mountains. When his master tasks him to take care of Zhu, a girl from a wealthy family who disguises as guy to herself from revenge, it sparks off the painful journey that they must go through once again.

Zhu’s father, in order to pay the kindness shown to him, has betrothed her to a General Ma, although Zhu is in love with Liang. Love can fester into hate in some while in the selected few, it can lead to undying love that survives one lifetime after another.

The movie is based on the Chinese legend 'Butterfly Lovers' (Liang Zhu), a tragic romance between two lovers, Liang Shangbo and Zhu Yingtai, from whom the name of the legend is known in Chinese. The legend is regarded sometimes as the Chinese equivalent of Romeo and Juiet.

The countryside is overrun by zombies, with only a few pockets of survivors just scraping by here and there. Captain Edward Reynolds brags about his victory over the dreaded pirate Victor Stagnetti to his loyal companion Jules; he has even assembled a new crew for his ship, including Ai Chow and Olivia, Serena's cousin. It is Olivia who informs the crew that the governor of Jamaica has ordered Serena's arrest and Olivia is on board to protect the crew from enemies, and to convince Edward and Jules to ask for Serena's pardon. When they finally go to Jamaica and ask Governor Littleton to pardon Serena, he is more interested in Jules' appearance than anything else. There has been a lot of argument over whether this is just an exploitation film, or is something else entirely. But man, whatever the hell this is, it's the ultimate form of it. If it's an exploiter, it tops all previous ones. This is probably the only movie ever shown in theaters which combines unsimulated sex and numerous blood squibs into the same scene. And for those who are of a mind to be all shocked over such things, the combination is possibly the most shocking sixty seconds of film ever created by anyone.

Okay, so the acting isn't the best. Neither are the special effects. Despite this, I've been thoroughly entertained and captivated for the entirety of the last 80 minutes by an excellent plot that keeps you on your toes, genuinely excellent humour and enough confusion to keep you thinking but not to frustrate.
