Discovery Channel - Really Big Things: Largest Telescope (2007) HDTV 720p x264 AC3-MVGroupLanguage: English 00:41:51 | 1280x720 | x264 - 4000Kbps | 29.970fps | AC3 - 384Kbps | 1.28GB Genre: Documentary* VERTICAL MOTION SIMULATOR At the Ames Research Center in San Jose, Calif., NASA has built one of the largest three-dimensional motion simulators in the world. Consisting of a simulated airplane cockpit that sits on top of a platform supported by a number of hydraulic pistons, this machine is housed in a 120-foot-high, 73-foot-wide and 36-foot-deep building. Matt will live his childhood dream by sitting in the astronaut's seat and guided by a pilot, he will experience a real-life simulation of the space shuttle's re-entry. * BLAST HOLE DRILL Back at the Aitik Mine in Gallivare, Sweden, Matt gets down and dirty and hops on board the 70-foot-tall, 340,000-pound machine that can bore into the earth to depths of 500 feet and below. Matt supports the crew in mapping out the drill pattern, drilling the hole and filling the blast holes with liquid explosives. Blasts usually consist of 200 to 300 holes, each hole containing one ton of explosives. Matt will have the power to blast up to 300 holes at once. * LBT TELESCOPE Matt Rogers accompanies a team of astronomers to visit the world's highest concentration of observatories pointing at the universe in Safford, Ariz. He will introduce viewers to the world's largest binocular telescope. Housed in an 18-story-high building, the telescope has side-by-side twin mirrors, each measuring 28 feet. With the collaboration of the United States and European countries, the construction of this machine was no small feat. The $100 million facility will help astronomers to see objects far deeper into space, surpassing the visuals from the Hubble Space Telescope. |

The Ancient Maya: Tools of Astronomy from How Did They Do That? Series The Ancient Maya: Tools of AstronomyStar-gazing reached incredible heights thousands of years before the Hubble. Learn the amazing advances made by the great ancient culture of Central America.Take another fascinating trip through time to discover the precursors from centuries or even millennia ago of todays cutting-edge technological breakthroughs. Using the latest scholarship, hands-on demonstrations, and dramatic reenactments, The Ancient Maya: Tools of Astronomy shows just how far ahead of their times they really were. Without the aid of magnifying technology or even a firm idea of where they stood on the planet, the Mayan grasp of the universe through astrological observation was simply stunning. Host Michael Guillen travels to Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula to get a firsthand look at the ancient world’s most skilled astronomers. |

An excellent movie to watch prior or after the "Inconvenient Truth, An (2006)" and "Who Killed the Electric Car? (2006)". This film's major subject is life, its evolution and its extinction. A further moral issue is hidden within the context of this film, hence the reference to the two aforementioned documentary films which deal with, respectfully, global warming and a controversy of restricting evolutionary technologies such as the "electric car". This movies, however, has hidden themes which can be linked with our current north American standard of life, living off of oil, failing to meet important governmental protocols that could help save our entire planet. |

Universe - The Cosmology Quest (2003)English | 53mn 20s | DivX 5 | 1715 Kbps | 720x544 | 25 fps | MP3 | 128 kbps | 1.37 GB Genre: DocumentaryUniverseThe Cosmology Quest is a unique mixture of a human interest and science documentary film. It exhibits a sharp understanding of the struggles in astronomy and cosmology during the past decades. As the first comprehensive film dealing with major new approaches in non-big bang cosmologies, it reveals several deep-rooted theoretical and observational controversies. This is a fact, well hidden from university students and the general public, which is recounted with candour; and potentially leads to the down-fall of the presiding Big Bang theory. |

TTC Audio - Robert M. Hazen - The Great Principles of Science (1999)English | MP3 64 kbps 44 KHz Stereo | 60 MP3s | 942 MB Genre: AudioBookThis course was produced in 1999 and was the precursor to the Joy of Science, the course lectures titles are exactly the same, it seems the content is pretty similar as well, but it is in fact a different taping. The great principles of science often reveal surprising connections between seemingly unrelated phenomena. Newtons laws of motion and gravity, for example, unified the supposedly separate domains of terrestrial and celestial motions. Similarly, the first law of thermodynamics established the equivalence of such disparate phenomena as heat, motion, light, and mass, all of which are forms of energy. |

The jewel was tested and found to be glass, but intriguingly it is older than the earliest Egyptian civilisation. Working with Egyptian geologist Aly Barakat, they traced its origins to unexplained chunks of glass found scattered in the sand in a remote region of the Sahara Desert. But the glass is itself a scientific enigma. How did it get to be there and who or what made it? |
